Meagre times. Hard times. Nils Guttormson and his wife Anne left Gol

and the valley for the US in 1880s. Within few years five siblings,

Ola, Barbo, Knud, Fingar, Barbara and their parents Guttorm and Kjerstine

had joined them in America.

Three daughters, Kari, Åse and Diis, stayed in Norway, in Asker. Many Norwegians knew

more about what happened in America, than they knew about their own country.

Long letters were written by those who had left, and very often they were extremely detailed.

Not always personal. Because of the high cost of postage, those who wrote to family

back home knew that the letter would be shared among all neighbours and relatives.

And some Norwegians really fullfilled their dreams.
